Bienvenidos to my Blog!

Hello Family, Friends, and Curious Readers,

Thanks for stopping in to see what I am up to. This is my first blog, and I hope not to bore you too much with the details of my life. But rather hope to offer you some insights into development work, the highs, the lows, and well the boring.

But before I move away for 27 months, let me give you a little information about myself before I lose a steady internet connection.

So after graduating from Boston College in 2005, I decided I wanted to learn Spanish and "save the world" so I moved to Cusco, Peru. I began by volunteering for The Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco by researching and writing a small business plan for the organization. I continued to work with the organization until February of 2008, when I returned to the US to prepare for my move to Madrid, Spain for 15 months to study an International MBA at IE Business School. And now, after a year of searching for the perfect development job, and taking odd jobs in the meantime, I have joined the Peace Corps and am volunteering again. So wish me luck, and PLEASE someone stop me from volunteering again!

The rest of Nick's Visit and a trip to Masaya!

This is a little late, since Nick left back in March, but better late than never.

So Nick and I had a wonderful time here in Matagalpa, but since Nicaragua is such a diverse place, I figured we should try to see some more of the country before he left to go back to the US. So after class on Friday morning, we headed down to Masaya with a former student of mine, Yasser. Luckily we were able to get seats on an express bus, and we arrived safely in the evening. Since I had been up since 6:00am, and since we were all hot and  hungry, we went to a Chinese restaurant down the street to have dinner then headed back to the hotel for the evening. Saturday was full of shopping for artisan crafts (which Masaya is known for and pretty much the reason for our trip), donkey cart rides, lunch of Baho (which is a traditional Nicaragua pot roast more or less), more shopping for clothes, avocado smoothies, and watching the sunset over the laguna at the edge of the city, followed by the best Mexican food I have eaten in years! It was a busy day as you can imagine, but we had a great time. Sunday, we had to take Nick to the airport, and I headed back to Matagalpa with Yasser for one last week of classes before semana santa.

Here are the pictures I know you have been waiting for! Keep making good choices!

  1. Looks like you all had a great time. Wow, too bad we missed out on the chicken basket and stuffed squirrel while we were there. Bet it would be tough to get those through customs!
My new passport finally arrived today so I'm all set for a return trip.

  2. Looks like you had a great trip to end your visit with Nick. I can't believe you found the T-shirt with Nashville on it and for only a dolllar. Continue to enjoy your adventures.
